UN Assistant Secretary-General calls on FM
United Nations Under-Secretary-General (SAG) for Politics, Peacebuilding and Peace Operations Khaled Khiari, who is currently visiting Sri Lanka, met with Foreign Minister Professor GL Peiris on Tuesday. , at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the meeting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs discussed issues related to Sri Lanka’s post-COVID recovery, including the economic challenges in the aftermath of the pandemic and the progress made in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs ) in Sri Lanka.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted recent progress in national reconciliation and human rights processes, including proposed revisions to the Terrorism Prevention Act (PTA) and reiterated the commitment of the Government to achieve tangible progress.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed that Sri Lanka will continue to cooperate with the United Nations in order to achieve lasting peace and development, in accordance with the international obligations that we have voluntarily entered into.
ASG Khiari was accompanied by the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka, Hanaa Singer-Hamdy, and other United Nations officials. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended the meeting.
ASG Khiari is visiting Sri Lanka at the invitation of the Government of Sri Lanka as part of the follow-up to the bilateral meeting with the President and the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UNSG) held in September this year on the sidelines of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
